TORONTO, Ontario – The Toronto Comic Arts Festival is gearing up to take Toronto’s comic book and graphic novel fans by storm on Saturday May 8^th and Sunday May 9^th, and they’re please to announce their first satellite event! Featured TCAF guest and award-winning cartoonist Jeff Lemire will be will be premiering the first book of his new monthly post-apocalyptic
sci-fi comic book series Sweet Tooth: Out of the Dark Woods, at a special event on Wednesday, May 5^th, 2010—just days before TCAF!

Set in a grim, post-apocalyptic future (that looks suspiciously like Southern Ontario…) Sweet Tooth Volume 1: Out of the Dark Woods is an epic road-trip science fiction graphic novel, sure to be equally enjoyed by fans of Lemire’s haunting Essex County Trilogy and contemporary superhero and sci-fi comics.

The Book Launch will take place at the Lillian H. Smith Library, home to the prestigious Merril Collection of Science Fiction and Fantasy, a non-circulating library collection which includes a vast selection of graphic novel material. The event starts at 7:30pm sharp in The Lillian H. Smith Library auditorium, 239 College St. (just east of Spadina Ave.) with doors open at 7pm.

The event will be hosted by SPACE’s Mark Askwith, and feature a reading, interview, and Q&A session with the audience. Jeff Lemire will be signing and sketching in advance copies of Sweet Tooth Vol.1: Out Of The Deep Woods, available for sale on-site a full week before its official in-store release!

In addition, the event will feature a display of over 50 pieces of original artwork from Sweet Tooth, including interpretations of Sweet Tooth’s world and characters by renowned Toronto and international cartoonists including Jeffrey Brown, Matt Kindt, Ray Fawkes, and Noel Tuazon!

Following the evening event there will be an after-party and mixer for comics fans and neophytes alike at O’Grady’s Pub, 171 College Street (Just down the street from the Lillian H. Smith Library).

Jeff Lemire’s complete catalogue of work, including Sweet Tooth, The Nobody, and The Essex County Trilogy, will be available for purchase at the event courtesy of The Beguiling Books & Art (www.beguiling.com).

Brooklyn-based illustrator, painter, designer and part-time musician Gary Panter is the mind behind the elaborate, quirky, Emmy Award winning set designs for the kid’s TV show Pee Wee’s Playhouse. Possibly the most influential graphic artist of his generation, Panter’s creative influence extends far beyond the realms of illustration. His work has been described as era-defining, earning him the monikers “King of Punk Art” and “King of the Preposterous.” He is described by Chris Bor of ARTINFO as, “A creator whose work comfortably straddles the worlds of painting, commercial art, illustration, cartoons, underground comix, and music,” and who, “tackles all of his projects with visionary punk panache.”

Panter’s artwork has appeared on record covers for Frank Zappa and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. He created the children’s playroom inside the Philippe Starck-designed Paramount Hotel in New York, and his animation series Pink Donkey and the Fly are featured on the Cartoon Network’s website. He is the creator of Jimbo, a “post-nuclear punk-rock cartoon character” whose adventures were first chronicled as a comic strip in the ’70s Los Angeles hardcore-punk paper Slash, and later in RAW magazine. Jimbo has also been published by Zongo Comics, founded by Simpsons and Futurama creator Matt Groening.

In 2000, Panter received the Chrysler Design Award recognizing his wide-reaching influence and mainstream success. From 2005 to 2007 his work was featured in the touring exhibition Masters of American Comics alongside that of such comic luminaries as Elzie Segar (Popeye), Chester Gould (Dick Tracy), Charles Schultz (Peanuts), Jack Kirby (Captain America), Harvey Kurtzman (founding editor of MAD magazine), Art Spiegelman (Maus) and others. His 2-volume monograph Gary Panter was published by Picturebox in 2008.

Our friends over at UDON have the first issue of their new series drop this week, a little earlier than planned. We were going to do a signing for this one but the schedule got thrown out of whack... sorry guys! On the positive side though, we're hoping to get writer Jim Zubkavich in at some point to sign our shelf copies, and (fingers crossed) we may even have some special copies too.

As for the story? It's an action comedy about a teenage girl ninja named Ibuki, her would-be rival karate-champ Makoto, and an arrogant male ninja that keeps getting in the way. Plus, lotsa kicking.

If you've ever been inclined to try an issue, check this one out, it's a good one.

Customers and friends! It's been 3 long years and like 6 book releases since our friend Jeffrey Brown has been to Toronto, and we're pleased to announce that the dryspell is over! Jeffrey Brown, author of Clumsy, Incredible Change-Bots, Cat Getting Out Of A Paper Bag, Funny Mis-Shapen Body, and the brand-new UNDELETED SCENES will be in Toronto April 26th, for an event sponsored by The Beguiling, The Toronto Comic Arts Festival, and Toronto Public Library's KEEP TORONTO READING month!

This is a completely free event, and all you gotta do is hop on the subway to North York station (it's on the Yonge line, for downtowners that never go north of Bloor). It's going to be a really fun event, with a great reading/presentation and a chat, signing, and sketching and Jeff's a really funny, engaging speaker. Jeff isn't scheduled for TCAF this year either (timing!) so if you wanna come see him and hang out, you've got one kick at the can. :)

Jeffrey Brown, one of the most celebrated autobiographical cartoonists of the past 10 years, returns to Toronto to celebrate the release of his newest graphic novel Undeleted Scenes. Brown is best known for his “Girlfriend Trilogy” of graphic novels including Clumsy, Unlikely, and AEIOU, from Top Shelf, and his recent works for Simon & Shuster’s Touchstone Books line including Funny Misshapen Body and Little Things. In addition, Brown’s popular Cat Getting Out of a Paper Bag is on its fourth printing for Chronicle Books, and last year Brown directed an animated music video for pop-rockers Death Cab for Cutie.

Undeleted Scenes collects all of Jeffrey Brown’s short stories and non-fiction pieces created since the release of Clumsy into one 352 page book, including little-seen and rare material. Brown will be on-hand to talk about the unique challenges of creating soul-bearing autobiography in comics, his development as a cartoonist and storyteller, and blurring the line between fact and fiction.

Horribleville! Wizzywig! New Viz!

Man do we have some great new books! As you know we're constantly getting in titles that aren't available from more obvious sources, and this week we got two really awesome books.

First up is the third volume of WIZZYWIG, a fictionalized biography of Kevin Mitnick, probably the most infamous computer hacker in history. In WIZZYWIG Mitnick becomes "Kevin Phenicle" but his story is no less compelling. Even if you have no interest in computers or hacking, this really is a fascinating look at human nature and a surprising part of our not-too-distant history. Author Ed Piskor is really doing something special here, check it out. Volume 3 is $15, and all volumes are currently in stock.

Next up: HORRIBLEVILLE, by KC Green, published by New Reliable. What to say, what to say? It's hilarious and dark, the first collection of the popular webcomic that's sort of a rollicking fictionalized autobiography that features the author and the antrhopomorphisized voices in his head. KC Green is also a guest at TCAF this year! We're super-excited to have him, and you can get a head-start on everyone else by picking up for $10.

Here's what Chris had to say about it when we sold out of it IN ONE DAY a few weeks ago:

It's a model for newspapers of the future. A 112 page broadsheet full colour newspaper (with 16 giant pages of comic strips by Tomine, Ware, Clowes), a 112 page magazine, and a 96 page "books section". 320 pages of content for $19.95, wrapped up in a lovely resealable plastic bag. On Wednesday, February 24th from Open to Close, we will be offering Thor #607 (Regular Cover) for just $1. It's a SIEGE tie-in! It's the first issue of a new arc! Something big might happen in it!? But it's just a buck this Wednesday. Afterwards it will return to the standard price of US$2.99. First come, first served. Limit two per person.

...so we've booked three events for March/April, but we can't really announce any of them yet. I just wanted to mention it somewhere, because they're all so different from one another, and so neat. We're pretty stoked.

- Comics are in fact shipping this Wednesday. Despite Family Day and President's Day, there is no delay this week.

- I don't know if you know this, but it was snowing like CRAZY last week in the northeastern United States. It'd be a good week to try a new book, and we'll be racking a bunch of recent releases that we recommend in with this week's new books.

BIG SHIPPING ADVISORIES THIS WEEK:

#1: We are getting all of our replacement copies of BATMAN & ROBIN #7 by Grant Morrison and Cameron Stewart that we were shorted last week. Thanks for your patience.

#2: There was a truck crash between the printers and the distributors, and a bunch of Marvel Comics were wrecked... or almost wrecked. Every store in Canada is only getting about 80% of the quantity of Marvel Comics that they ordered this week, with the other 20% coming in next week. So we're getting everything on the shipping list, just not our full orders, unfortunately. We should have enough to cover pullfiles and most customers as we do order extra copies of all books, but we feel it's important to inform you ahead of time.

The End of an Era - Barefoot Gen Concludes

Congratulations to Keiji Nakazawa and Last Gasp Publishing, who this week completed the English-language release of the groundbreaking manga Barefoot Gen. Originally serialized beginning in 1973, the story is a the slightly-fictionalized biography of author Keiji Nakazawa and his experiences as a young man caught in the Hiroshima bombings of 1945. It's a harrowing first-person account of the bombings and the tragedy, a powerful anti-war work and a must-read.

A very early English translation of Barefoot Gen Volume 1 was released in North America in 1976, making it one of the first manga to appear in English. Though the first 4 books of the series had seen print in various editions over the following 30 years, in 2005 Last Gasp committed to publishing the complete 10 volume series in English (in a matching trade-dress!), for the first time. This January they completed that goal, and English-language manga is richer for the experience.

All 10 volumes are currently in stock on the second floor, and priced at about $15, give or take the exchange rate.
