Hello folks!

I just wanted to drop in to remind you that this Saturday, May 1st is FREE COMIC BOOK DAY at participating comic book stores around the world. That means that if you drop by your local comic shop chances are they'll be giving away specially designed comic books to get you reading and enjoying the medium, or maybe reading books that you'd never tried before.

At The Beguiling we've been participating in this industry-wide event since the first year, and in recent years we'd really been going all out by having creator signings, events, working with libraries and more. This year? We're gonna scale back on all of that because, frankly, all of our energies are going into NEXT weekend's Toronto Comic Arts Festival.

But yeah, we're totally participating this year too! If you come by The Beguiling between 12pm and 6pm on Saturday May 1st, we'll hook you up with some great free books. If you want a Preview of that's available, you can head to http://freecomicbookday.com, and take a look at the list there. We've decided to carry about 75% of the books this year in big quantities, anything that we like, stock, and support in store... and we should have a great selection of books from previous years as well. If you're one of those folks that needs EVERY free comic book day book though, we'll be having a contest for you too. Details when you show up. :)

Oh, and just as an enticement to our regular customers who might need a little incentive to bring a friend or offspring by the store for free comics (and really, isn't that incentive enough?), we'll be having a sale: 50% off back issue bin comics (doesn't include "wall-books").

Hey folks! We've just received Dan Clowes' highly anticipated new hardcover graphic novel, Wilson, which will make its official debut next week at The Toronto Comic Arts Festival. We've got it available for early sale though, ready for you to come in and grab a copy.

In Wilson, Clowes uses a series of vignettes in a variety of styles to tell the story of the titular character with his trademark honesty and humour. The comic book release of the year in all quarters. Available on both floors, $23.95.

The Toronto Comic Arts Festival is pleased to announce a fantastic reading by and discussion with one of the Featured Guests of the 2010 Festival, James Sturm! Best known to Torontonians as the creator of the acclaimed graphic short story The Golem’s Mighty Swing (now available in the collection James Sturm’s AMERICA) and Fantastic Four: Unstable Molecules, Sturm returns in celebration of his brand new graphic novel, Market Day, and will read and present from this new work on Thursday, May 6th, at 7PM at The Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre.

MARKET DAY is a timeless tale of how economic and social forces can affect a single life: An expectant father named Mendleman has his life goes through a massive upheaval when he discovers he can no longer earn a living doing the work that defines him. As the realities of the market place sink in, Mendleman unravels. Sturm draws a quiet, reflective and beautiful portrait of Eastern Europe in the early1900s–bringing to life the hustle and bustle of an old-world market place on the brink of the Industrial Revolution.

Joining Sturm on stage will be British Columbia-based artist Miriam Libicki. Libicki, an American Jewish girl from a religious home, enlisted in the Israeli Army one summer against everyone's best advice. Many qualities seem to make her unsuited for IDF life: her Hebrew isn't great, she is shy and passive, and she has a tendency to fall in love with anything that moves. Libicki turned her experiences into the graphic novel series jobnik!. Libicki will be discussing her body of work including jobnik!, and her contributions to the academic work The Jewish Graphic Novel: Critical Approaches.

Both artists will have prepared audio/visual presentations, and will participate in a moderated Q&A with the audience. Market Day, jobnik!, and other works by both Sturm and Libicki will be available on site for purchase courtesy of The Beguiling Books & Art.

Jason Kieffer's most recent book, The Rabble of Downtown Toronto, hasn't been without controversy. This book launch should provide a fantastic insight into the work, and will consist of a presentation by Kieffer, and an onstage interview. RABBLE is a book that raises many questions about homeless and disadvantaged persons in Toronto, and this is certainly a great opportunity to have those questions answered.

The evening will be hosted and Jason will be interviewed on stage by Dave Lapp, author of the graphic novel DROP-IN. DROP-IN is Lapp's autobiographical account of working with disadvantaged youth in Regent Park.

The connections between Jews and comic art on the printed page and on screen (film, TV and computer) offer one of the most enigmatic and valuable sagas in all Jewish/popular cultural life. Before Jewish artists and entrepreneurs created the comic book and the archetypal superhero, Rube Goldberg and Milt Gross invented wildly imaginary machines and the first graphic novel. More important, the Fleischer brothers as much as invented animation, with Betty Boop’s syncopated madness. For 30 years, movie cartoons filled theatre screens between features, and as they crashed, William M. Gaines (EC Comics) and Harvey Kurtzman (Mad Magazine) reinvented comic art once more. And that was only the beginning! Comics scholar Paul Buhle opens up the TJFF’s exploration and celebration of this field with film clips and observations, high points, disappointments and, increasingly, Jewish self-identification.

What’s new in Jews and comics, and … what’s old! This lively forum — with special guests and listeners joining the conversation — will probe familiar questions (what is it about comic art that drew Jewish artists in the first place?) and go on to recent ones (why is 90 percent of comic art on the web?). Just some of the other topics: Where is the comics industry going, now that the traditional comic book of the pulp variety is dying, and what has happened since comics became a growth industry, but mainly for the sale of superhero characters to Hollywood? Paul Buhle (author or editor of 42 books) and Harvey Pekar (American Splendor) have collaborated on a series of comic art volumes, including The Beats, Students for a Democratic Society, an adaptation of Studs Terkel’s Working and the forthcoming Yiddishland. Graphic novelist Ben Katchor (“The most poetic, deeply layered artist ever to draw a comic strip”) is the only cartoonist to receive a “genius” MacArthur Fellowship. Katchor’s most recent Pop Opera (in collaboration with Mark Mulcahy) will be performed at Lincoln Center in May.

Guild #1 - Sold out!

Apparently if someone with over a million Twitter followers tweets that she just signed comics at a store, then it only takes 36 hours for that store to sell out of those comics.

Just a quick note, we broke the trade paperbacks into two sections, superhero and not superhero, because there were so many of them. Seriously, this week is monstrously huge. A lot of this stuff came out to west-coast accounts last week, so it looks like those of us in Canada and the east coast get a 'double week' for new product. At any rate, much like their hyper-successful Buffy comics, and their hyper-successful Joss Whedon one shots, we're kinda betting that this three issue series is going to be... very popular amongst folks who might not otherwise be coming into comic book stores. Broken Pencil Presents: The Toronto Small Press Schooner Room

As part of TCAF’s commitment to local Toronto and DIY artists, we’ve teamed up with indy/arts mag Broken Pencil and the editors of the WOWEE ZONK anthology to create The Toronto Small Press Schooner Room, an exciting new exhibition space at the 2010 Toronto Comic Arts Festival.

Due to limited available space at TCAF, The Festival and the members of Wowee Zonk will be curating Small Press Schooner — an area reserved specifically for local creators with a unique/DIY approach to comics.

While Small Press Schooner will be open for the entirety of TCAF 2010, those applicants chosen to exhibit will be divided between showing on either the Saturday or the Sunday of the festival. It is very important to note: If you are chosen to exhibit with Small Press Schooner, you will be doing so for only one day of the festival.This timetable will be compiled once all applications have been received and all exhibitors decided upon. All exhibitors chosen will pay a minimal fee of $10 for their space.

To speed up our process this year, we’re asking all creators, collectives, and self-publishers interested in exhibiting at the Small Press Schooner to register online at https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?hl=en&formkey=dEVEbzc5VWlTQ2NJQ2FjcUFYVU5qcEE6MA.

The Toronto Comic Arts Festival is approaching soon, less than 2 months away on May 8th and 9th 2010! While we have several events, panels, presentations, and readings ready to go, we’re totally interested in taking programming suggestions from our exhibitors, past presenters, and the larger comics community!

Daniel Clowes will kick off the 2010 Toronto Comic Arts Festival in style with the presentation of his new graphic novel WILSON, published by premiere Canadian publisher Drawn & Quarterly. WILSON is hotly anticipated by graphic novel fans worldwide and Clowes’ appearance at TCAF will make this one of the most eagerly anticipated comics events of the year. Clowes will present on WILSON, and be interviewed on stage.

Copies of WILSON as well as much of Clowes' back-catalogue will be available for purchase on site. A signing by Clowes will follow the event.

Event begins at 7pm sharp. Doors open at 6pm. No admission after 7:30pm.

We're happy to report that we managed to get in early copies of BLACK BLIZZARD, the very first graphic novel by Yoshihiro Tatsumi. Heavily referenced in last year's A DRIFTING LIFE, BLACK BLIZZARD marked an artistic break-through for Tatsumi and is essentially the first "Gekiga" book.

Drawn & Quarterly has produced a lovely archive edition of the work, which includes all 16 of the original colour pages from the book (though the rest of the work is in b&w). While the work was originally published in 1956, it holds up spectacularly well today and is an amazing and gritty counterpoint to much of the mainstream comics work being published in North America (or even Japan...) in the 50s. An amazing, important book and one that we're very glad to see released in English.

BLACK BLIZZARD is $21.95, and available on both floors of the store. It is highly recommended.

New Books en Français at The Beguiling!

Hey folks! We've been receiving a steady stream of excellent new French language releases over the past few weeks, and now I'm going to take a moment to tell you about some of them! Up top is Pascal Girard's JIMMY ET LE BIGFOOT, a beautiful-looking new graphic novel by Girard, who is perhaps only known in English comics circles for his excellent D&Q Petit Livres Nicholas. Jimmy et le Bigfoot is published by Montreal pub "Les Editions de la Pasteque", who are exhibitors at this year's Toronto Comic Arts Festival, and author Pascal Girard will be joining him! Come check out his work before this year's fest!

(Oh, and, my French language skills are pretty poor, but even I am managing to work through this with little-to-no extra effort.)

Next up, it's my favourite mangaka Taiyo Matsumoto, and the first two volumes of his current series! It's called Le Samourai Bambou, from the original Japanese "Takemitsu Zamourai", and it's with script-writer Issei Eifuku, and it's utterly awesome. The whole book is drawn in an insane mash-up between Matsumoto's style and Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblock prints. It's really gorgeous looking, and it is killing me that I can't read it... this one is a more difficult read (it's very non-linear). Still, great looking and inspiring. Matt Forsythe from Drawn.ca was talking about it the other day, and I had no idea it had been released into French...!

Also neat? Kazuo Kamimura is the artistic collaborator of Kazuo Koike on "Lady Snowblood", and there's a new French language collection of his work called Follies Passions Volume 1. It's a sort of a "hot steamy adultry" manga with a gorgeous cover and some lovely art. No one is sliced to bits though... at least not in this volume.

There've actually been a few dozen new French language releases in the past few weeks, and you'll see them jammed into every nook-and-cranny at the store... It'd be nice if we had a bigger store, wouldn't it? But yeah, good stuff. Check it out!

TORONTO, Ontario – The Toronto Comic Arts Festival is gearing up to take Toronto’s comic book and graphic novel fans by storm on Saturday May 8^th and Sunday May 9^th, and they’re please to announce their first satellite event! Featured TCAF guest and award-winning cartoonist Jeff Lemire will be will be premiering the first book of his new monthly post-apocalyptic
sci-fi comic book series Sweet Tooth: Out of the Dark Woods, at a special event on Wednesday, May 5^th, 2010—just days before TCAF!

Set in a grim, post-apocalyptic future (that looks suspiciously like Southern Ontario…) Sweet Tooth Volume 1: Out of the Dark Woods is an epic road-trip science fiction graphic novel, sure to be equally enjoyed by fans of Lemire’s haunting Essex County Trilogy and contemporary superhero and sci-fi comics.

The Book Launch will take place at the Lillian H. Smith Library, home to the prestigious Merril Collection of Science Fiction and Fantasy, a non-circulating library collection which includes a vast selection of graphic novel material. The event starts at 7:30pm sharp in The Lillian H. Smith Library auditorium, 239 College St. (just east of Spadina Ave.) with doors open at 7pm.

The event will be hosted by SPACE’s Mark Askwith, and feature a reading, interview, and Q&A session with the audience. Jeff Lemire will be signing and sketching in advance copies of Sweet Tooth Vol.1: Out Of The Deep Woods, available for sale on-site a full week before its official in-store release!

In addition, the event will feature a display of over 50 pieces of original artwork from Sweet Tooth, including interpretations of Sweet Tooth’s world and characters by renowned Toronto and international cartoonists including Jeffrey Brown, Matt Kindt, Ray Fawkes, and Noel Tuazon!

Following the evening event there will be an after-party and mixer for comics fans and neophytes alike at O’Grady’s Pub, 171 College Street (Just down the street from the Lillian H. Smith Library).
