Update January, 2008: Check out these great flyers for upcoming Beguiling Author Events! The Beguiling is happy to help you put together an extensive, informative, appropriate and fun graphic novel section for your school library or public library! Read on to find out more.
The Beguiling has been in business since 1987, and in that time we have built up a solid reputation for our product knowledge and the diversity of comics and graphic novels we stock. As a result of our reputation, we have been sought out by librarians across Canada supplying circulating and reference public libraries, and school libraries from grade school through university. We’ve worked with Lorna Toolis of the Merrill Collection for over 10 years in developing the Merrill Collection’s graphic novel selection to be among the best public collections in the world, and built up an impressive array of titles within the Toronto Public Library’s circulating collection. Given the rather dramatic increase in requests of this past year we have decided focus more attention on maintaining lists of titles suitable for libraries catering to a variety of audiences. Accolades The North America-wide “Eisner Spirit of Retailing Awards,” honours excellence in comics retailing and The Beguiling honoured with this award in its inaugural year, and has remained one of the best in the world ever since. We have also been recognized by respected comics industry periodical The Comics Journal as the second best store in North America (the first place store is now out of business, making us #1 by default). Internationaly renowned Montreal-based Comic and Graphic Novel publisher Drawn & Quarterly lists The Beguiling as one of the five best comic book shops in the world. The Beguiling is two floors and over 1500 square feet large, with well over 5000 distinct books, trade paperbacks, and graphic novels in stock at any given time. Product Knowledge and Diversity The Beguiling’s product knowledge is virtually unmatched. We were an early adopter of manga and now boast the most comprehensive selection of translated Japanese comics in Canada. As readers, we also tend to appreciate more artistic and esoteric works, meaning that what might be considered rare or difficult to find through other sources is on our store shelves and available for purchase year-round. None of this comes at the expense of any other segment of comic books and graphic novels either; we carry the full line of Marvel Comics and DC Comics superhero material, Buffy, Star Wars, Yu Gi Oh and other licensed graphic novels, an extensive selection of comic strip reprints, and a wide variety of educational and informational texts on graphic novels as well. In addition, we:
We read, enjoy, and appreciate the medium of comics and graphic novels. We’re happy to impart our expertise and enthusiasm to you!
With The Beguiling, you know you’re dealing with a staff who have made a career out of comics, and have an in-depth knowledge of specific content. During the selection and ordering process, we strive to ensure that content is appropriate for its intended audience and that it conforms to content guidelines as set out by your library mandate. We recognize that for many librarians, illustrated stories for an older teen and adult audience are an entirely new field with many potential pitfalls, and we are committed to being responsible guides through this exciting new medium. How to Order We have compiled a list of some of our recommendations (which is by no means a complete list of offerings) to help illustrate the range of what is available in the world of graphic novels. If you are interested in obtaining this list just contact us, we're easily reached via e-mail at libraries@beguiling.com. Let us know which library you represent and its type, i.e.: the target age groups of the collection you are creating, public or private library, etc. Common things we hear that help us gauge how to prepare a compliment of graphic novels for a specific library are “I'm looking for something to get the boys who are reluctant readers”, “I need comics for the French immersion program”, or “The girls at the school have commented we don’t have any girls’ manga”. It is also helpful for us if you can provide a list of what graphic novels you hold already. The more we know about the specific needs and niches of your library, the easier it is for us to help you into the exciting new medium of comic art. For more on how to contact The Beguiling, please visit this page: http://www.beguiling.com/aboutus.htm Invoicing and Billing We are able to customize our invoicing and billing to fit your needs. In addition to purchase orders, we accept Visa and Mastercard. No order is either too large or too small.
Our base discount for libraries is 20%. Other discount arrangements are negotiable based on ARPs and regular ordering arrangements. Also, because we deal directly with many publishers, we are often able to offer books at the best exchange rate possible. For example: Although Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons (one of the best-selling graphic novels of all time) currently lists at $32.95 Canadian, thanks to the stronger Canadian dollar we offer this book at an effective discount of 37%, or $20.75. Librarians also receive a 20% discount on all in-print books while at The Beguiling. In conclusion… We hope that for all of your graphic novel, comics, and manga needs, that you’ll consider shopping with The Beguiling. You’ll find that the advantages of dealing with a knowledgeable and informed purchasing agent who offers competitive discounts and thorough customer service add up quickly. Thank you, Jason Azzopardi |
