NOW IN STOCK: Used Shoujo Manga Anthologies!
Posted Monday, November 23, 2009

Hey Shoujo manga fans! Want a whole heap of Japanese shoujo manga? Look here! We recently picked up a collection of about 20 Japanese-language shoujo manga anthologies from 2000-2002, including Ribon, Sho-Comi, and others. We're selling them off for the bargain-basement price of just 3 bucks a pop.

Not Shown: We picked up a bunch of tankoubons too. Mostly Japanese-language collections by Yu Watsae, but some other neat stuff in there too. We priced them at a buck-or-less, and bundled some into sets. Improve your Japanese! Impress your friends! Or just get the really nice, Japanese-printed editions! For $1!

Located on the second floor, above the magazine rack.

NOW IN STOCK: Street Angel TPB
Posted Sunday, November 22, 2009

In advance of next month's AFRODISIAC collection by Jim Rugg and Brian Maresca, the fine folks at SLG publishing have put the phenomenal STREET ANGEL trade paperback back into print...! This new printing has all of the same great content as the first one, but it's now on a heavier coated ("shiny") paper. It's an excellent read, one of my fav comics of the past few years. Creator Jim Rugg is also a regular fixture here in Toronto at TCAF. It retails for about 15 bucks, and is on both floors of the store.

Oh, and, that AFRODISIAC collection I mentioned? Chris Pitzer at Adhouse Books sent me a digital preview of that book and it is going to utterly kick ass. It is easily one of the best-designed books of 2009, and the content his pretty hilarious too. Don't miss it--or Afrodisiac's first appearance in Street Angel--this winter.

NOW IN STOCK: Tim Burton's Tragic Toys

It's Tim Burton's Tragic Toys! Featuring Tim Burton's Oyster Boy, Stain Boy, Toxic Boy, Pin-Cushion Queen, and more! Each of the four different box sets contains 3 PVC figures straight from the mind of Mr. Burton, and retails for just $15.99. They can be found on the second floor.

We don't normally carry toys, statues, or figures here at the store, but we had a number of requests for these and made an exception. It is the holidays, after all.

The DVD also features two bonus features, a complete recording of Jeff Smith being interviewed by Scott McCloud at Ohio State University, and a separate 10 minute interview on RASL.

Hot Potatoe is, as D&Q describes it, "Part art monograph, part comics collection, HOT POTATOE is filled with mixed media cardboard constructions, watercoloured drawings, altered found texts and Bell’s most intense, dizzying comics from the contemporary avant-garde comics anthologies – Kramers Ergot and The Ganzfeld." We were supposed to have received our orders of this last week, but due to a shipping snafu we didn't Quite get'em. They are in-stock now, though, and ready for purchase. $44.95, main floor.

The Beguiling Recommends...
AUG090884 Pim & Francie In Golden Days HC 28.99
You know who doesn't put out a lot of comics? Al Columbia. The initiated are already familiar with--and largely in awe of--Columbia's work, and this is the first major release in... geeze, it might be his first 'graphic novel' release? Comics, art, storybook pages, sketches, and much more. His recent acclaimed outings in MOME were just a taste of what this book has to offer. Don't miss it!

SEP090803 Hot Potatoe HC 39.95
Also skirting the line between comics and fine art and everything in-between, HOT POTATOE is a new collection of work by Marc Bell, published by Drawn & Quarterly. It's a lovely oversized book, a treat for fans and an easy introduction to all that Bell has to offer to newcomers.

JUL090054 Usagi Yojimbo HC Yokai 14.95
JUN090605 Criminal Deluxe Ed 49.99
Both of these fine books were announced by Diamond as shipping last week, which is frustrating because Diamond didn't ship them to Canada until this week. Still, this is a brand new, full colour original hardcover graphic novel featuring Usagi Yojimbo, and a sterling collection of the popular new crime series by Brubaker and Phillips, so hopefully no one minds TOO much waiting an extra week to get them.

SEP090395 Sky Doll Doll Factory U.S. Exclusive Claire Wendling Var #1 (of 2) 5.99
This is the U.S. translation of the Skydoll guidebook/artbook/storybook, with a brand new cover by illustration and animation favourite Claire Wendling. Either you have no idea what I'm talking about, or this is a book you've been waiting years to buy... or buy again!

SEP090628 Supergod #1 (of 5) 3.99
Warren Ellis' new superhero project. Lots of early interest in this one.

SEP090966 Tank Girl Skidmarks #1 (of 4) 3.99
This is one of a couple of new mini-series by the new TANK GIRL team of creator Alan Martin and Artist Rufus Dayglo! We were lucky enough to have Dayglo in town for a signing a few months back and he showed me some of the pages for this--looks fantastic! All y'all Tank Girl fans, make sure to come by this week! We ordered a bunch but it's HIGHLY UNLIKELY that we'll ever be able to get a re-order on this one as it's from a British publisher.

JUL090344 Beast GN 15.99
Finally, this one's a bit of a shot in the dark for me but it looks pretty solid. It's an original graphic novel by a relative newcomer named Marian Churchland (she illustrated a few issues of Elephantmen and a 'Conan' one-shot), but the art looks brilliant and evocative. I'm gonna give it a go myself, give it a flip. Interview/Preview here: http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=22450

Did You Know? Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant
Posted Wednesday, October 21, 2009

So the teen adventure movie The Vampire's Assistant is opening this weekend in theatres. It's an adaptation of the popular Cirque Du Freak novels for tweens and teens (commonly referred to as "YA"), but an earlier adaptation of the novels was in manga form. Adapted a few years back (and already a bestseller in Japan), the Cirque Du Freak manga is adapted from the original novels by Takahiro Arai, and it's pretty good... and faithful to the novels to boot.

Yen Press is releasing the manga in English, and we've got the first three books in stock for $10.99 each.

There are a ton of graphic novel adaptations of popular novel series making it to shelves, but these were far ahead of the curve and about as "authentic" a manga adaptation as you're likely to get. If you're curious about the movie or are looking for a suitably spooky gift for a younger reader, make sure to check these out.

An Embarassment Of Manga Riches: RED SNOW
Posted Wednesday, October 14, 2009

A good day for great Japanese comics has gotten even better, with the arrival of RED SNOW by Susumu Katsumata. Published by Drawn & Quarterly, Red Snow is the latest in their reprints of classic Gekiga manga from the 1960s and 70s that has seen excellent collections like Yoshihiro Tatsumi's The Push Man and Other Stories and Seiichi Hayashi's Red Colored Elegy. I had almost forgot this was coming out, and now here it is and it's made my whole day.

By the by, this was solicited with a different cover (pictured to the right), so when you come looking for it at the store make sure you look for the new cover, pictured above.

Available on both floors, $27.95.

ITEMS OF NOTE THIS WEEK:

JUL091099 Battle Angel Alita Last Order TP Vol 12 9.99: Savvy Beguiling Customers know that we've had this one for a few weeks now, the newest installment in the incredibly popular Battle Angel Alita series. Actually, this one is easily in our top-5 bestsellers at the store, even after 22 volumes, (10 original, 12 "Last Order"). Anyway, we're getting even more this week, and hopefully a restock on the out-of-stock volumes soon.

AUG090981 Akira Kodansha Ed GN Vol 01 24.99
AUG090982 Ghost In Shell Kodansha Ed GN Vol 01 26.99
The long, long, long out of print Dark Horse editions of AKIRA make their triumphant return this week, courtesy of their Japanese publisher Kodansha (now doing business directly in North America). I'm pretty excited to have these perennial, evergreen titles back in print. Here's hoping that Kodansha does a nice job on the design and packaging (and reprint quality!).

Oh, and GITS is back as well, though we've had that in stock pretty-consistently for 10 years now.

MAR090226 Absolute Death HC 99.99: Your Absolute Sandman collection isn't complete without it!

AUG090968 Act-i-vate Primer HC 24.99: This popular webcomics collective gets a fancy-schmancy hardcover collection of beautiful, original comics material (and not found online either). If you're the type of person who just wants a great anthology full of beautiful work, this one's for you.

AUG090226 Air TP Vol 02 Flying Machine 12.99
AUG090574 Daredevil Return Of King TP 17.99
AUG090666 Hatter M The Looking Glass Wars TP Vol 02 Mad With Wonder 14.95
JUL090286 Heavy Liquid TP New Ptg 24.99
It's a whole bunch of "the next volumes" in popular ongoing trade paperback series', as well as a new printing of Paul Pope's awesome HEAVY LIQUID trade paperback.

JUL091247 Art Of Osamu Tezuka God Of Manga HC 40.00: While this one isn't the first western-produced artbook on a Japanese manga-ka, this is the first from a non-manga publisher, and apparently it's a damned-good book. As I mentioned at the time in my Previews Review, " Tezuka’s colour-work doesn’t really get the play it deserves, and his art in general is often as breathtaking as his storytelling. I’m really hoping this book delivers the goods because with Tezuka there really is a ton of ground to cover." And early reviews are very, very positive indeed. Good stuff!

JUL090284 Blood And Water TP 14.99: This is an early work by Judd Winnick, before all of the superhero stuff, and I promise you it's a hell of a lot better than most of the rest of his output. Granted, it's vampires, and I know some people feel that the Vampires are a little played out. But seriously? I remember really enjoying it at the time, and it's got fantastic art by the totally under-rated Tomm Coker. Make sure to give it a flip this week if you're in the store.

JUN091213 Final Fantasy VII 10th Anniversary Ultimania SC 37.99: It's a Japanese artbook full of the pretty boys from Final Fantasy 7, what more could you want?

JUL090845 Fixer & Other Stories TP 19.95: This is a "complete" collection of Joe Sacco's Bosnian war stories, originally collected as the two hardcovers THE FIXER and WAR'S END. At $20 it's an amazing deal and a brilliant read, a must-have in any good graphic novel collection.

JUL090867 Mome GN Vol 16 Summer 09 14.99: New Mome!

AUG090669 Odysseus The Rebel GN 12.95: This is a sort of weird, sort of neat retelling of the Odyssey. Originally serialized online, it's got a disarming cartoony style and surprising cadence. I was honestly having a little trouble read it online, I'm glad to be getting a print edition.

AUG090416 Pride & Prejudice Prem HC 19.99: Marvel actually did a pretty straight-ahead adaptation of Pride & Prejudice, cleverly packaged as a sort of contemporary women's fashion/lifestyle magazine. The hardcover continues that packaging trend nicely. Nice, idiosyncratic art on this one as well, a welcome change from the Marvel house style.

JUL090864 You Are There HC 26.99: New Jacques Tardi, the second of Fantagraphics' new reprints.

AUG090527 Deadpool #900 4.99: It's the debut of the THIRD Deadpool ongoing series, with a square-bound 80 page book of original material. It will then count down from 900. Yeah.

AUG090299 Hector Plasm Totentatz (one Shot) 5.99: So the first one-shot was actually really well-received here at the store, particularly among other artists and comics creators. We're happy to have the first one in stock, just in time for this new one-shot by the same creator (and just in time for Halloween too!). For more info check out the website at http://invincible.110mb.com/Hector/Plasm.htm

AUG090232 House Of Mystery Halloween Annual #1 4.99: Lots of customer interest in this one, a stand-alone tale in Vertigo's new House of Mystery series featuring an amazing array of guest-artists including Luca Rossi, Giuseppe Camuncoli, Amy Reeder Hadley, Mark Buckingham and Kevin Nowlan, Mike Allred and more.

AUG090367 Walking Dead #66 2.99: Any week with Walking Dead is a good week.

Happy Thanksgiving! We're closed!
Posted Thursday, October 08, 2009

Much like the LCBO (the only store I shop at other than The Beguiling) we'll be closed on Monday, October 12th. Technically it's Thanksgiving, but honestly we all just kinda need a day off. So, we're sorry, but we hope that you also have Monday off, and enjoy all of the comic books already on your bookshelves and in your collections.

We'll be open again Tuesday October 13th, at 11am.

Love,

REMINDER: Abby Denson's DOLLTOPIA launch next Friday!

Abby Denson's DOLLTOPIA Book Launch and Party!
Featuring Abby Denson and Matt Loux
Friday, October 16th, 2009, 6pm-8pm
@ The Central, 603 Markham Street
FREE

http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=105326729762

Mini-comix Queen Abby Denson will be releasing her new full-length graphic novel DOLLTOPIA this fall, and The Beguiling and publisher Green Candy Press are teaming up to throw a party!

DOLLTOPIA is the story of a group of dolls that are tired living the factory-set, cookie-cutter existences that their owners and makers have laid out from them… and revolt! They seek DOLLTOPIA, a place where a doll can be a doll. It’s a mature rumination on the nature of identity, individuality, and making a mark in a society that tends towards sterility and monoculture, told in the style of a Todd Haynes biopic.

The evening’s event will include a reading and presentation from Abby Denson on DOLLTOPIA, the official release of the graphic novel from Green Candy Press, and Abby’s even been bringing awesome gourmet cupcakes to all of her tour stops for everyone who attends! Also joining the evening presentation will be Abby’s good friend and graphic novelist Matt Loux! Matt is the author of the Oni Press graphic novel SIDESCROLLERS (which fans of Scott Pilgrim will enjoy!), and his most recent series are the (really, really good) young readers graphic novels SALT WATER TAFFY. The third volume is the brand new The Truth About Dr. True, and Matt will be signing copies and presenting from this work!

The event is a bit of an early one, starting at 6pm right next to The Beguiling at THE CENTRAL, on the main floor! Hopefully you can come out for the event!

Beguiling Employee In Today's Star!

Congratulations to The Beguiling's Tory Woollcott, who was profiled alongside her new graphic novel Mirror Mind in today's Toronto Star. Tory's an employee who came to us through being a dedicated and enthusiastic TCAF Volunteer, and her graphic novel's a good one. She's also had three (3!) separate launches for the book, for different audiences... something a lot of indy and self-pub'd creators should think about!

You can check out the story online (as well as some graphic novel recommendations for young readers by Peter) at http://www.healthzone.ca/health/article/706391. Congrats to Tory!

Oh, and, Mirror Mind is currently in stock on the first floor at The Beguiling.

John KING-CAT Porcellino in Toronto TONIGHT!

KING CAT: John Porcellino In Toronto
Autobio comics legend at The Beguiling touring MAP OF MY HEART!
Wednesday, 07 October 2009, 7pm-10pm
@ The Beguiling, 601 Markham Street, Toronto, Canada
FREE
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=109815885562

Join us in welcoming autobio comix legend John Porcellino, author of the KING-CAT series of comics, to his first Toronto! Porcellino will be celebrating his 20th anniversary of making comics, and touring his new graphic novel MAP OF MY HEART, now in store!

Porcellino is touring cross-country in support of this new work and his wonderful back-catalogue of material. The Toronto stop will include doing an all-new audio/visual presentation of his work, and the author will be signing and sketching for fans.

Porcellino has been writing, drawing, and publishing minicomics, comics, and graphic novels for over twenty-five years. His celebrated self-published series King-Cat Comics, begun in 1989, has inspired a generation of cartoonists. Diary of a Mosquito Abatement Man, a collection of King-Cat stories about Porcellino’s experiences as a pest control worker, won an Ignatz Award in 2005, and Perfect Example, first published in 2000, chronicles his struggles with depression as a teenager. King-Cat Classix, published in 2007, is a comprehensive overview of the zine's first fifty issues, and Thoreau at Walden, is a poetic expression of the great philosopher’s experience and ideals. According to cartoonist Chris Ware, "John Porcellino's comics distill, in just a few lines and words, the feeling of simply being alive."

This is a fantastic creator in his first Toronto visit… we sincerely hope that Toronto’s cartooning community will come out and show him a warm welcome…!

--

Note: This event will actually be happening across the street from The Beguiling, at Rocco's Plum Tomato's PLUM ROOM. Enter off of Markham Street, behind the main restaurant. We've been giving the Beguiling's name/address for this event because it's a little confusing to give directions to this spot. So yeah, it'll be a big, comfortable space. Come on out!

The Beguiling Recommends:

SPECIAL: AUG090241 SWEET TOOTH #2 (MR) 2.99
The second issue of Jeff Lemire's excellent new Vertigo series SWEET TOOTH drops this week, a seemingly magical-realist take on the post-apocalypse. To celebrate the release of this book and give props to our buddy Jeff, we've got a special deal for you, one week only: If you buy SWEET TOOTH #2, we'll give you a copy of SWEET TOOTH #1 for free. That means all you latecomers can catch up on the series for the price of the second issue, and anyone who already picked up #1 can get a copy to lend to friends, give away, or just leave on the rack (if you don't really want an extra copy).

Make sure to check it out!

MAR094248 A DISTANT NEIGHBORHOOD GN VOL 01 23.00
APR090822 SUMMIT OF GODS GN VOL 01 (OF 5) 25.00
What's that? Why, it's two new graphic novels (manga) by Taniguchi Jiro, author of The Walking Man and The Ice Wanderer. Taniguchi is one of my favourite manga-ka, and I find his work tremendously inspiring... not to mention incredibly accomplished. Really, he's doing stuff on an entirely different level to most manga-ka, hell to most comics creators in the entire world. A Distant Neighborhood is considered his masterwork, and now that it's available in English expect me to recommend it non-stop to all who will hear: It's pretty great stuff, you should buy it. Also available is another Taniguchi work, Summit of the Gods, which I haven't read but... it's Taniguchi. I mean... yeah. Really. AWESOME.

JUL090583 CRIMINAL SINNERS #1 (MR) 3.50
Yay! Criminal starts again this week! Don't miss out...!

AUG090209 PLANETARY #27 3.99
Holy shit. PLANETARY. Check out this preview of the first six pages of this issue and tell me you don't immediately want to jump back into this series: http://wildstorm.blog.dccomics.com/2009/08/31/planetary-27-the-preview/

JUL098291 STRANGE TALES #1 (OF 3) 2ND PTG PAUL POPE VAR (MR) 4.99
AUG090509 STRANGE TALES #2 (OF 3) (MR) 4.99
AUG090510 STRANGE TALES #2 (OF 3) RED HULK VAR (MR) 4.99
I dug the first issue of this collection of indy-comix all-stars doing stories featuring their fav Marvel characters. This second issue continues along with the strip I've been waiting for since more-or-less the series was announced, Jim STREET ANGEL/PLAIN JANES Rugg doing Brother Voodoo. If you've read any of Rugg's awesome Afrodisiac stories you know you're in for a treat.

Oh, and surprisingly enough Brother Voodoo actually gets his own ongoing series starting this week as well. Apparently he is the new Sorcerer Supreme!

Other items of note...

JUN090027 GRANDVILLE HC 17.95
This is the new original graphic novel by Bryan Talbot, author of the Luther Awrkright series and the incredibly popular Alice In Sunderland. We were fortunate enough to have Mr. Talbot through town on his tour for Alice, and when he mentioned that his next major project was going to be a detective story told with talking animals, we were perhaps a little skeptical. But this looks surprisingly good, check it out.

JUN090257 PETER & MAX A FABLES NOVEL HC (MR) 22.99It's a novel, based on Fables. They've been running previews in the back of the comic books for the past few months now.

AUG090511 ASTONISHING X-MEN #31 2.99
It's the first issue of the relaunch of Warren Ellis' Astonishing X-Men run, now with Phil Jimmenez on artistic duties to ensure it should stay on something resembling a schedule.

AUG090106 BATMAN AND ROBIN #5 2.99
I honestly expected quite a few more people to drop the series with Frank Quitely off the artistic chores... I was proven very wrong. Bumped the orders back up and no quick sell-out of #5. Sorry folks.

JUL098323 CHEW #2 4TH PTG (MR) (PP #886) 2.99
JUL098325 CHEW #4 2ND PTG (MR) (PP #886) 2.99
We've got all of these still in stock, btw, in various printings. Since folks seem to love this mini (I thought it was pretty solid myself) we've comitted to keeping every issue in stock as long as we can. So feel free to try it out and get caught up, it looks to continue going strong for a while!

JUL090703 CHRONICLES OF WORMWOOD LAST BATTLE #1 (OF 6) (MR) 3.99
JUL090704 CHRONICLES OF WORMWOOD LAST BATTLE #1 (OF 6) WRAP 3.99
New Garth Ennis, sequel to the first series. Not the same thing as Ben Templesmith's WormWood Gentleman Corpse.

AUG090458 DAREDEVIL #501 2.99
FWIW Daredevil fans, the recently released DARK REIGN: DAREDEVIL: THE LIST #1 actually takes place between issue #500 (Brubaker's last ish) and this one (Andy Diggle's first ish) and is pretty essential if you're going to be reading it. Just a heads-up.

AUG090463 DOCTOR VOODOO AVENGER OF SUPERNATURAL #1 3.99
That's right, it's the Doctor Voodoo ongoing series! I am actually surprisingly interested in this one. New Avengers fans should probably give this one a good long look.

AUG090285 HAUNT #1 2.99
New from Todd McFarlane. And Robert Kirkman. And Ryan Ottley. And Greg Capullo.

AUG090301 I SELL THE DEAD (ONE SHOT) 4.99
This one looked like one of the most interesting books I'd seen from Image in a while, a one-shot about two graverobbers that notice some of their purloined corpses are coming back to life. Yeah, ZOMBIES, I know some of you are kind of sick of 'em, but a good story is a good story regardless of genre. Anyway, turns out it's based on (or an adaptation of) an indy film with the original creators involved, and it's adapted by the guy who did the beautiful-looking GUERILLAS comic from Image, so why not?

JUL090399 KING CITY #2 2.99
It's the second issue of an amazing series! First issue still in stock! Bonus material!

AUG090454 X-MEN VS AGENTS OF ATLAS #1 (OF 2) 3.99
All you X-men fans take note: Agents of Atlas is a pretty darned-good series, and you should read it. Hopefully this two-issue crossover with the X-Men will convince you of that very fact...!

--

There are more than 100 new comics this week, dozens and dozens of graphic novels, dozens and dozens of trade paperbacks and graphic novels, and probably a ton of stuff not on this list. It's a great week!

More About The Slew:

A couple of years back Eric San (aka Kid Koala) and Dylan J. Frombach (aka Dynomite D) were approached to soundtrack a new documentary feature film that was in production. The duo worked for a long time on the psych rock-influenced score, only for the filming to collapse and any release to be canned. Items of note this week:

JUL091141 Book Of Genesis Illus By Robert Crumb HC 24.95
The book of the week could only be this massive new collection of comics from R. Crumb, the single largest release of original work in his career. An adaptation of the Book of Genesis might not be to everyone's tastes... but hey, neither is Crumb's work (although we strongly suggest that folks get on board with the latter). But the work is gorgeous, we've seen a great preview and strongly recommend you check this one out.

AUG090198 Astro City Astra Special #1 (of 2) 3.99
Taking a short, two issue break from the massive DARK AGES arc, we get the first of two Astro City specials.

JUN090765 Die Hard Year One #1 3.99
Yup, that's a prequel to the DIE HARD movies, in comics form.

JUL090757 Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep #4 (of 24) 3.99
This has proven incredibly popular for us, even though it's a fairly unique format for a story.

JUL090153 Green Lantern #46 (blackest Night) 2.99
Since a number of people asked for it...

JUL090539 Shang-chi Master Of Kung-fu Black & White One-shot 3.99
Something a little different from Marvel...!

JUL090343 Sky Pirates Of Neo Terra #1 2.99
A new anime/video game-esque style mini-series from Camilla D'Errico and image comics. Full colour too.

AUG090003 Previews #253 October 2009 4.50
AUG090004 Marvel Previews October 2009 Extras 0.99

It's a Previews week...

APR091097 Illustration Magazine #27 15.00
Another new issue of Illustration, though a little late.

APR091046 Tezukas Black Jack TP Vol 06 16.95
JUN091097 Tezukas Black Jack TP Vol 07 16.95

Fantastic!

FEB090241 Absolute Promethea HC Vol 01 99.99
This is just about the best format for this material I could envision. As much as I like JH Williams' work on Detective Comics right now, his considerable skill was put into the service of a much more complex narrative on Promethea, and I think it rose to the occasion. Good stuff.

AUG090907 Best American Comics HC 2009 22.00
This year's guest editor? None other than Black Hole creator Charles Burns! He joins series editors Jessica Abel and Matt Madden for, hopefully, another excellent collection of comics.

AUG091192 Boilerplate Historys Mechanical Marvel HC 24.95
Steampunky!

MAY090057 BtVS Season 8 TP Vol 05 Predator & Prey 15.95
Jeez, there's just a ton of graphic novels out this week, and for every taste and audience. Buffy continues to bring in fans of the show (diehard, new, or lapsed...) and this fifth collection has been hotly demanded by fans.

JUL090259 High Moon TP Vol 01 14.99
Print collection of the popular Zuda webcomic.

JUL090639 Johnny Cash I See A Darkness GN 17.95
Apparently this is a very good eurocomics biography of The Man in Black, with stark black and white art. I wasn't terrible impressed with the likeness on the cover on this one, but the overall effect is nice. Looking forward to checking this out.

JUL090730 Logicomix GN 22.95
This one's actually already in store, and it's neat as all heck. Math and logic in comics form.

AUG090885 Prison Pit SC Book 01 12.99
New Johnny Ryan...

JUL090874 Refresh Refresh GN 17.99
Excellent new graphic novella from First Second.

AUG091052 Sherlock Holmes Hounds Of Baskervilles GN 14.95
The first of many, many Sherlock Holmes graphic novel projects to see print between now and the release of the movie.

JUN090248 Sleeper Season 2 TP 24.99
And with the publication of this book, the complete SLEEPER arc (including POINT BLANK and SLEEPER SEASON 1) is now back in print. Ed Brubaker's found some great success with his new crime series' CRIMINAL and INCOGNITO, and deservedly so. We definitely recommend this one.

JUL090885 Trotsky HC 16.95
I actually don't remember what this is, but who doesn't want a graphic novel about Trotsky, amirite?

JUN090040 Umbrella Academy TP Vol 02 Dallas 17.95
Fiiiiiinally. We've still got the complete run in stock in singles, but so many people came to Umbrella Academy with the collected edition that they've been waiting for this second trade paperback for a while. It's finally out this Wednesday, enjoy!

Seth Designed A Parade Float
Posted Friday, September 25, 2009

Everyone now has a very good reason to visit the Niagara Wine Festival this Saturday.

--

Click for larger.Niagara Welcomes the Wine King of Dominion City!

Wine King Float in the Niagara Wine Festival Parade
Saturday 26 September

Wine King Float and Dominion on display in The Show Room Wed 30 Sept - Sat 21 Nov
Opening Reception Fri 16 Oct at 8pm

This year's Niagara Wine Festival Parade will have twice the royalty. Since 1952, the Grape King has ruled over the festival, but in 2009 the Wine King of Dominion City will join the parade on a float of his own. The Grape King needn't worry about a battle for supremacy, however, the Wine King character and the community of Dominion are fictional creations of renowned Canadian cartoonist Seth.

Artist members of the Niagara Artists Centre, with the support of the Brock Centre for the Arts, have teamed with Seth and RENDER* to create a parade float from far away Dominion City, the fictional setting where Seth's stories take place. The float features the Wine King, a rotund wine lover about ten feet high, and a gathering of cartoon grape minions. Marching with the Wine King will be members of the Royal Orders of Connoisseurs and Aficionados, costumed performers of the Suitcase In Point theatre company along with students from Brock University. Among the performers will be two human-sized bottles of Megalomaniac and Henry of Pelham winesthe Good Stuff, meeting the expectations of a connoisseurs taste.

After the parade the float will be parked in The Show Room of the Niagara Artists Centre. Exhibited with it will be a scale model of Dominion City as well as historic images of the grandest days of the Grape & Wine Festival Parade. "The three things are a good fit," says NAC Director Stephen Remus. "Dominion is a throwback to the hay days of fifty years ago. A sense of those times that escapes nostalgia is pervasive in Seth's world. I think the Wine King offers us an opportunity to celebrate the history of our parade without being sentimental".

Born in Clinton, Ontario, Seth began work as a cartoonist in the mid 1980s. After over twenty years of artistic output, he's created a number of graphic novels and strips (including Clyde Fans, Wimbledon Green, and George Sprott), had his work featured three times on the cover of The New Yorker, contributed a twenty-five issue serial for the New York Times Magazine, and exhibited his Dominion City at the Art Gallery of Ontario. The exhibition component of the exhibit at NAC is being toured by RENDER and was curated by Andrew Hunter.

The Wine King Float and Dominion City will be on view in NAC's newly renovated Show Room from Wednesday 30 September until Saturday 21 November. There will be an opening reception for the exhibition on Friday 16 October starting at 8pm.

Kid Koala @ The Mod Club
Saturday, October 3rd, @ 7PM
The Mod Club Theatre, 722 College St., Toronto
Tickets $18.50 at Ticketmaster.com

A couple of years back Eric San (aka Kid Koala) and Dylan J. Frombach (aka Dynomite D) were approached to soundtrack a new documentary feature film that was in production. The duo worked for a long time on the psych rock-influenced score, only for the filming to collapse and any release to be canned. Although the film may never see the light of day, its music is about to be brought to life on stage, courtesy of Kid Koala, Dynomite D, DJ P-Love, and the former rhythm section of Wolfmother.
